Nsanje villagers sustain dyke construction project

Realising that help cannot go on for good, communities in Traditional Authority Mbenje in Nsanje district have mobilised themselves and extended construction of a dyke along Lalanje River that was initially dug with assistance from a UNDP supported project on disaster risk reduction.

Lalanje is a perennial River that flooded during the rainy season. In the past, the river destroyed houses, property and crops. Most families often relocated to makeshift camps during the rainy season to escape floods.

Chikhwawa communities empowered to fight floods

Communities in Tombondera village Traditional Authority Chapanga in Chikwawa district situated in the Southern region of Malawi this rainy season survived heavy floods following construction of dyke using skills they gained from a UNDP supported project on disaster risk reduction in the area.

UNDP with funding from Irish Aid, through various Non Governmental Organisations supports interventions aimed at reducing risks of flooding in Chikhwawa and Nsanje districts.

Chikhwawa and Nsanje districts are prone to floods due to their geographical location near Malawi’s biggest river, the Shire river.

UNDP funds study on integrating health (HIV) and gender issues into the Environmental Impact Assessment process

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) says the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) is the only tool where project impacts are systematically analysed and control measures put in place to avoid, prevent or mitigate impacts of HIV/AIDS

UNDP Acting Deputy Resident Representative (Programmes) Ms. Mizuho Yokoi made the remarks during a stakeholders meeting  organised by the Department of Nutrition, HIV/AIDS with support from UNDP  on 13th March 2012  to disseminate findings  of a study on mainstreaming gender and HIV in EIAs.

Malawi prepares the 2013 National Human Development Report

The Government of Malawi with technical and financial support from UNDP is working on a National Human Development Report (NHDR) whose theme is Inclusive Growth: From Poverty to Prosperity.

Speaking during a validation workshop for the concept note for the NHDR on 6th March 2012 at Lilongwe Hotel, UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Richard Dictus said Human Development Reports (HDRs) are based on new approaches to economics and development, putting people at the centre.

The workshop was organised to scrutinize and validate the concept note and Terms of References for the management structure of the NHDR and gain valuable inputs on key topics to be included in the report in order to reach a substantive analysis and relevant policy recommendations to achieve inclusive growth in Malawi.
