UN Resident Coordinator and Irish Ambassador visit Nsanje residents affected by floods |
Nsanje, April 12, 2008 – The Malawi and Irish government and different UN agencies are working in partnership with communities affected by the recent floods in Nsanje District in the Lower Shire.
Nsanje is one of the poorest districts in Malawi and whose residents are mainly subsistence farmers. High incidents of malaria and HIV and AIDS prevalence rates are some of their human development challenges.

LILONGWE, February 2008 – Secretary to the Cabinet Bright Msaka and UNDP Deputy Resident Representative (Programmes) Maha Bahamdoun exchange documents after the signing ceremony of the 2008 Democratic Governance annual work plan. This year, UNDP will support implementing partners including Office of the President, Democracy Consolidation Programme, Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Justice, and Parliament to implement activities aimed at enhancing democracy, rule or law and justice in Malawi. The three components of the work plan are:
- Democracy consolidation programme: aiming to increase participation of communities in decision-making; advocating changes and implementing policies, laws and practices which affect their rights and livelihoods; holding public bodies accountable
- Formal and informal justice systems strengthened through a unified programme based approach to justice
- Strengthened capacity of Parliament, in support of its strategic plan so that it can fulfill its constitutional mandate more effectively

President Mutharika launches 2007/2008 Human Development Report and unveils the national climate change adaptation plan |
LILONGWE, 11 February 2008 – Malawi’s President has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthen its response to climate change and integrate environmental and climate risk-related issues into development policies and programmes.
His Excellency the President of the Republic of Malawi, Dr. Bingu wa Mutharika was speaking at the national launch of 2007/2008 Human Development Report titled Fighting climate change: human solidarity in a divided world.
