United Nations Volunteers Deployment in Malawi
All development sectors in Malawi benefit from specialised human capacity filled by the national and international United Nations Volunteers (UNVs). Volunteers deployed through the UNV programme are providing critical skills in understaffed hospitals, teaching in schools, mobilising communities to protect their environment, providing technical assistance in implementing the decentralisation process in district assemblies and establishing efficient procurement and legal frameworks in Government. More volunteers are sharing their skills on intensifying agricultural production. Read the Unsung Heroes of Malawi’s Development
The UNV Programme in Malawi is continually expanding and responding to diverse emerging challenges to enable the country bolster its growth and development efforts. Currently there are up to 101 volunteers - 35 National and 66 International UNVs. The Programme provides support to UNDPs programmatic areas of democratic governance, poverty reduction and sustainable growth, and capacity development. It also provides UNVs to other UN agencies including WFP and UNHCR in areas of ICT, procurement, finance and administration, engineering, community services and refugees. The National Farmer’s Association of Malawi (NASFAM) has benefited from three fully funded Danish UNVs over the last four years, and a fully funded Norwegian UNV is currently posted in the Malawi Human Rights Commission.
The scope of UNVs across government aims at building the capacity of government institutions in delivering services. Through UNDP’s Decentralisation and Sustainable Economic Empowerment programmes, international and national volunteers have been posted in most of the districts working with District Assemblies in planning and financial management, and supporting poverty reduction strategies and community livelihood activities. More recently and with support from the GFATM, 25 medical doctors and three ART supervisors have been posted in district and central hospitals respectively through the Ministry of Health. This builds on ongoing support over the last two years of five specialist doctors working at Kamuzu Central Hospital through UNDP’s Public Sector Reform Programme.
Malawian UNVs are also serving in Angola, Mozambique, Lesotho, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Morocco and Afghanistan, and are mostly hosted by UN agencies.
